Getting There
About 30 minutes by bus or car south of Sarandë, past Ksamil.

Why Go

Founded by Greek colonists and later a Roman town, Butrint was lived in for some 2,500 years before it was abandoned. Paths through the woods lead past a theater, a baptistery with a mosaic floor, a great basilica, the Lion Gate and a Venetian tower, to a castle above the Vivari Channel. It is a World Heritage Site.

Tips

  • The baptistery's mosaic floor is usually kept under sand to protect it.
