Why Go

The town spreads along both banks of the Gilão, joined by an old seven-arched bridge, below a ruined castle and rooftops crowded with churches. Ferries cross from the edge of town to Tavira Island, a sandbar of dunes and beaches; at Praia do Barril, rows of rusting anchors recall the old tuna fishery.
