Apostle Islands

Wisconsin

21 islands in Lake Superior, with sandstone sea caves and old lighthouses, off the pretty harbor town of Bayfield.

Kayak the wave-carved sea caves at Meyers Beach, or take the boat tour past the historic lighthouses. In the coldest winters, the caves fill with ice, and thousands walk out. Madeline Island, by car ferry from Bayfield, is lived-in and has a small museum.
