Why Go

Built under Pericles in the 5th century BC, the Parthenon was the temple of Athena, the city's goddess. Around it stand the Erechtheion with its porch of maidens, the little Temple of Athena Nike and the monumental gateway of the Propylaea.

On its slopes are the Theatre of Dionysus, where Greek tragedy was born, and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, still used for summer performances.

Tips

  • Go at opening time or late in the afternoon, and wear shoes with grip; the marble is slippery.
