Why Go

Begun in 1882, the basilica became Antoni Gaudí's life's work until his death in 1926, and building has gone on ever since. Its facades are carved with the story of Christ, and inside, columns branch like trees beneath light that turns from blue to orange through the day.

In 2025 its central tower, dedicated to Jesus, made it the tallest church in the world. Lifts climb some of the towers for views over the city.

Tips

  • Book weeks ahead, and choose a late-afternoon slot for the best light through the west windows.
  • Shoulders and knees must be covered.
