Getting There
The train leaves from Fort William station; regular trains run the same line all year.

Why Go

The line runs about 42 miles west past lochs and mountains to the fishing port of Mallaig, crossing the 21 arches of the Glenfinnan Viaduct, built in 1901, at the head of Loch Shiel. At Glenfinnan, a monument marks where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745, and a short path climbs to a viewpoint over the viaduct.

Tips

  • To watch the train cross the viaduct, walk up to the Glenfinnan viewpoint half an hour before it's due.
