Why Go

Kīlauea has been erupting in repeated episodes in Halema'uma'u Crater since late 2024, but activity changes daily. See nps.gov/havo before you go. Whatever's happening, the overlooks, the Nāhuku lava tube and the Kīlauea Iki crater hike are unforgettable.

The Chain of Craters Road drops 3,700 feet to the coast and the Hōlei Sea Arch. In Hawaiian tradition, Kīlauea is the home of the goddess Pele.

Tips

  • Volcanic fumes can harm people with breathing problems, children, and pregnant people. Check the air quality.
