Why Go

The congregation was a center of Black life in Charleston from slavery onward; one of its founders, Denmark Vesey, was executed in 1822 for planning a slave revolt, and the church was burned. On June 17, 2015, a white supremacist killed nine people at a Bible study here. Visitors are welcome to pay respects and attend Sunday worship.
