Why Go
German immigrants built the neighborhood in the 1800s, named for the canal they crossed from downtown, which reminded them of the Rhine. After long decline, its Italianate buildings now house some of the city's best bars and restaurants, around the restored Music Hall and Washington Park.
Tips
- Take a tour of the old brewery tunnels under the streets, where German brewers once stored their lager.
