A hilltop market town at a crossroads of old roads, with a church door framed by two ancient yew trees.
The town stands 244 meters up where the Roman Fosse Way meets other roads, and its huge market square once traded thousands of sheep. The north door of St Edward's Church, between two gnarled yews, is said to have inspired Tolkien. Horse fairs are still held in May and October.
