Worth a DetourWrocław
A bright market square, and hundreds of tiny dwarf statues.

Poland's holiest shrine, a fortified monastery on a hill that keeps the icon of the Black Madonna.
Pauline monks from Hungary founded the monastery in 1382 and were given the icon of the Virgin and Child, darkened by age and smoke and scarred by two slashes on her cheek from raiders in 1430. Legend says St. Luke painted it. In 1655 the monks held off a Swedish army here, a stand that rallied the whole country.
The icon hangs in its own chapel, crowded with pilgrims and votive gifts. Visit the baroque basilica, the treasury and the Knights' Hall, and climb the tall tower for the view over the city.
