Why Go

Built around 3200 BC in the Boyne Valley, the great round mound, faced with white quartz, covers a stone passage that leads to a cross-shaped chamber. Around the winter solstice the rising sun shines through a roof box above the door and lights the chamber floor. With Knowth and Dowth it forms Brú na Bóinne, a World Heritage Site, visited only on guided tours from the visitor centre.

Tips

  • Places on the tomb tour are limited: book ahead in summer.
