Full Guide

For seven centuries the seat of Iceland's bishops, now a quiet modern cathedral in the fields.
Skálholt was the religious and learning center of Iceland from 1056 to 1785, and Iceland's last Catholic bishop, Jón Arason, was beheaded here in 1550. Today's church, finished in 1963, has bright modern stained glass, and a tunnel under it leads to the old crypt.
