Karaikal is a part of Puducherry on the Bay of Bengal coast, surrounded by Tamil Nadu's Kaveri delta. France held it from 1739 until 1954, and today it's mostly known for the Saturn temple at Thirunallar, which draws huge crowds each time Saturn changes signs in the zodiac.

It's a good base for a tour of the delta's temples and shrines, including the Nagore dargah and Velankanni church, both just a short drive down the coast.

Karaikal has its own railway station. Tiruchirappalli Airport (TRZ) is about 135 km away, and Pondicherry is about 130 km north.

Autos and local buses link the town with Thirunallar, about 5 km away. Hire a car for the delta temples.

  • Evening: Walk on Karaikal Beach.

  • Saturdays at Thirunallar are far busier than other days.
  • Saturn's transit, Sani Peyarchi, brings very large crowds: check the date if you're not coming for it.
  • Remove your shoes at temples, and dress modestly.
