Kalalau Trail and Hanakāpī'ai

One of the world's great coast hikes, starting at Hā'ena. The first 2 miles reach a beach, and the full 11 miles need a permit.

Getting There
From Kē'ē at the end of Highway 560, by shuttle or a reserved parking spot.

Why Go

Everyone needs a day-use reservation or a camping permit. Hanakāpī'ai Beach is a 4-mile round trip, and the falls beyond are a harder 8. The full trail is narrow and exposed, so check conditions.

Tips

  • Don't swim at Hanakāpī'ai: its rip currents have killed many people. Don't cross streams in flood.
