About 20 minutes by train from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia.

Why Go

Salt was mined here from the 13th century until 1996, and the miners carved chapels and sculptures as they went. The tourist route leads down some 800 steps through chambers and past underground lakes to the Chapel of St. Kinga, where even the chandeliers are made of salt. It was among the first places on UNESCO's World Heritage list, in 1978.

Tips

  • It stays around 57°F underground all year: bring a light jacket.
