Why Go

On April 26, 1986, a reactor at the Chernobyl power plant exploded, and the country around it was evacuated for good. Before the war, day tours from Kyiv visited the empty city of Pripyat, with its fairground and apartment blocks, the vast arch now covering the reactor, and the Duga radar. Russian troops occupied the zone in the first weeks of the full-scale invasion in 2022, and it has been closed to visitors since.

Tips

  • Tours still offered online can't run while the zone is closed: check before booking anything.
