Why Go

Begun in 1501, the monastery is the masterpiece of the Manueline style, carved with ropes, sea creatures and armillary spheres. Its two-story cloister is one of the loveliest in Europe.

Vasco da Gama and the poet Camões lie in the church, which is free to enter.
