The steps start from Polyzoidou Street in the old town; a road climbs to the top.

Why Go

The Venetians built Palamidi in 1711–1714, one of the finest fortresses of its age, with eight bastions linked by walls. Greek fighters took it from the Ottomans in 1822. Legend says the stairway from town has 999 steps; the real count is lower, but it's still a stiff climb, and you can also drive up.
