Why Go
The Army of Tennessee lost six generals and thousands of men in one charge here. Carter House's farm office is among the most bullet-scarred buildings of the war, and Carnton, which became a field hospital, stands beside the largest private Confederate cemetery.
Franklin's Main Street is good for lunch afterwards. Stones River, in Murfreesboro, is the other big battlefield near Nashville.
