In 1839, Mormon settlers drained a swamp and built a city, with a grand temple. After Smith's killing at Carthage in 1844, most left for Utah on a long trek. Historic Nauvoo's free restored homes and shops are staffed by church volunteers, and the Community of Christ runs the Smith family sites.
