Why Go

King John I founded the monastery after the battle of Aljubarrota secured Portugal's independence in 1385, and building went on for more than a century. Its church, cloisters and chapter house mix Gothic and Manueline carving, and the Unfinished Chapels stand open to the sky. It is a World Heritage Site.
