Ludwig II's white fantasy castle of turrets on a crag above a gorge, with rooms of swans, Wagner legends and gold.
Ludwig began the castle in 1869 as a retreat from the world, inspired by Wagner's operas and medieval legend. He lived here only about six months before he was declared insane and died mysteriously in 1886; seven weeks later it opened to the public. Tours show the Throne Room, never given its throne, and the Singers' Hall.
Much of the castle was never finished, and its walls hide modern touches such as central heating and an early telephone.
