Why Go

Thomas Bodley refounded the university library in 1602, and it now holds more than 13 million books, with the right to a copy of every book published in Britain. Guided tours lead into Duke Humfrey's Library, with its painted ceiling, and the vaulted Divinity School of the 1480s.

Next door stands the Radcliffe Camera, a round, domed reading room of 1749, the most photographed building in the city.

Tips

  • Book a tour online ahead, especially for the longer ones into the reading rooms.
