Why Go

Seven popes lived in Avignon from 1309 to 1377, and they built one of the largest Gothic buildings in Europe. Its echoing halls are mostly bare now, but chapels and the pope's chamber keep frescoes of hunting scenes and birds, and a tablet guide shows the rooms as they were. The rooftop terraces look over the Rhône.
