Why Go

About a third of central Riga's buildings are Art Nouveau, put up in the boom years around 1900. The most extravagant, on Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela, were designed by Mikhail Eisenstein, the father of the film director Sergei Eisenstein.

The Riga Art Nouveau Museum, in an architect's apartment at Alberta iela 12, shows how the rooms behind the façades looked, with a spiral staircase painted in its original colors.
