Why Go

Paid for by public donations and unveiled in 1935, the monument honors those who died in Latvia's war of independence. Liberty's three stars stand for the country's historic regions. It survived the Soviet years, when laying flowers here was an act of protest.

Soldiers change the guard on the hour during the day. Around it, the Bastejkalns park follows the old moat, with bridges and swans.
