Why Go
Opened in 1937, the bridge's 4,200-foot (1,280 m) span was the longest in the world, and its 'International Orange' towers are now the symbol of San Francisco. The east sidewalk is open to walkers every day, and cyclists share it or use the west side. The best views are from Crissy Field and Fort Point below the south end, and from Battery Spencer on the north end, where the towers rise above the fog.
Tips
- Rent a bike near Fisherman's Wharf, ride across to Sausalito and take the ferry back.
- Fog often clears by midday in summer; mornings in spring and fall are usually clearest.
