Getting There
About 50 minutes by car northwest of Santa Fe. On busy days, when canyon parking is full, you'll need the free park shuttle.

Why Go

Ancestral Pueblo people lived in Frijoles Canyon from about 1150 to 1550, building homes against and into the soft volcanic cliffs. Their descendants live in the nearby pueblos today.

Tips

  • The easy Main Loop Trail passes the village of Tyuonyi and the cliff dwellings; add Alcove House, 140 feet up four ladders, if you're comfortable with heights.
