About 16 miles south of the center: an hour by bus, or a train to Tsarskoye Selo station and a short bus ride.

Why Go

The architect Rastrelli rebuilt the palace for Empress Elizabeth in the 1750s, with a facade more than 300 meters long. Its Amber Room, panels of carved amber given to Peter the Great by the king of Prussia, was looted in the Second World War and never found; the copy made by Russian craftsmen was finished in 2003. A great landscaped park surrounds the palace.
