Getting There
About 20 minutes by bus or car from Salisbury; 1.9 miles west of Amesbury.

Why Go

The outer circle of sarsen stones, each about 4 meters high and 25 tons, is topped by lintels locked on with joints copied from woodwork. Inside stand smaller bluestones, dragged about 140 miles from the Preseli Hills of Wales, and research in 2024 traced the central Altar Stone to northeast Scotland, more than 435 miles away. The monument frames the sunrise at midsummer and the sunset at midwinter.

The visitor centre, 1.6 miles away, has an exhibition of finds and reconstructed Neolithic houses; a shuttle bus or a walk across the downs takes you to the stones.

Tips

  • Walk back to the visitor centre across the fields past the burial mounds instead of taking the shuttle.
