Northern Lights

Tromsø lies under the auroral oval, so on clear winter nights green curtains of light can fill the sky.

Why Go

The aurora can appear any dark night from September to March, but clouds off the sea often hide it. Tours leave in the evening and drive to wherever the sky is clear, along the fjords or inland toward the Finnish border, and many serve hot drinks around a fire while you wait.

Tips

  • Check the cloud forecast, not just the aurora forecast: clear skies matter most.
