Why Go
West Thumb Geyser Basin's boardwalk runs along the water, with pools right at the edge. At Lake Village, the butter-yellow Lake Hotel, from 1891, is the park's oldest and a lovely place for a drink. Fishing Bridge is good for watching cutthroat trout and birds.
The whole area sits inside the Yellowstone Caldera, formed in an eruption about 640,000 years ago.
