Why Go

The dam on the Amstel that gave the city its name stood here. The Royal Palace, built as the town hall in the 17th century, has a vast marble citizens' hall and is open when not in royal use.

Dutch monarchs are inaugurated in the Nieuwe Kerk next door, which holds exhibitions.
