Why Go

Mexican free-tailed bats moved into crevices under the rebuilt bridge in the 1980s. Locals first feared them, but they now eat tons of insects each night and draw crowds every summer evening.

Tips

  • Watch from the bridge, the grassy bank by the Statesman bat-observation area, or a bat-watching boat on the lake.
