Why Go

Finished in 1888 of 'sunset red' granite quarried in the Hill Country, the capitol's dome rises 302 feet, a little higher than the one in Washington. The builders were paid in land: three million acres of the Texas Panhandle.

Tips

  • Stand in the center of the rotunda and look up at the star in the dome, and try the whispering effect.
