Why Go

A church has stood here for more than a thousand years; Edgar, king of the English, was crowned on this site in 973, in a ceremony that set the pattern for English coronations. The present abbey was begun in 1499, after a bishop dreamed of angels going up and down a ladder to heaven, now carved on the façade.

Tower tours climb 212 steps past the bells to the roof, with a view over the city.
