In the center, next to the Abbey, a 5-minute walk from the station.

Why Go

The Romans built a temple to Sulis Minerva and a bathing complex around the spring, which rises at about 46°C. The Great Bath, still lined with Roman lead, is open to the sky, with Victorian statues of emperors and governors on the terrace above.

The museum shows the gilded bronze head of the goddess and curse tablets thrown into the spring, asking her to punish thieves.

Tips

  • Go at opening time or in the evening to avoid the crowds; you can't bathe in the Roman pools.
