Why Go

Work began in 1984, after a fifth of historic Bucharest was cleared to make room, and the dictator never saw it finished. With more than 1,000 rooms, it's among the largest administrative buildings in the world and is said to be the heaviest.

Tours lead through vast halls of Romanian marble, crystal chandeliers and hand-woven carpets; the parliament still meets here.

Tips

  • Book ahead and bring your passport; there's a security check.
