Why Go

Scotland's royal palace has state apartments still used by the monarch. The rooms of Mary, Queen of Scots, in the old tower, are where her secretary David Rizzio was murdered in 1566.

Behind it stand the roofless ruins of Holyrood Abbey, founded in 1128.
