Why Go
The streets branch off one spine in a herringbone pattern: straight on the west side to catch the cooling breeze, curved on the east against the cold bora. Building outside the walls was forbidden until the 18th century, and seven of the twelve towers still stand. A grand staircase climbs to the Land Gate, where a stone bridge replaced the drawbridge only in 1863.
The town claims a house near the cathedral as the birthplace of Marco Polo, though most historians say he was born in Venice.
