Why Go

Most of Poland's kings were crowned and buried here, and so were national heroes and poets. The Sigismund Chapel, built in 1519–1533 under a gilded dome, is one of the finest Renaissance chapels north of the Alps.

Steep wooden stairs climb the tower to the Sigismund Bell, cast in 1520 and rung only on great occasions. Karol Wojtyła, later Pope John Paul II, said his first Mass in the crypt.
