Why Go

Monks began digging caves into the hillside here in 1051, and the monastery grew into the center of Orthodox learning in the Slavic world. The Upper Lavra holds the rebuilt Dormition Cathedral, the 96-meter Great Bell Tower and museums of treasures and icons; below, narrow tunnels lead past the glass-topped coffins of mummified saints. With St. Sophia's, it is a UNESCO site.

Tips

  • Women cover their heads and men wear long trousers in the churches and caves.
