Why Go

Amboise became a favorite royal residence in the late 15th century; Charles VIII died here in 1498 after hitting his head on a low door lintel. Much of the castle was demolished later, but the royal apartments, the great towers and the little Gothic chapel of Saint-Hubert, Leonardo's resting place, remain, with terraces over the river and the town's slate roofs.
