Why Go

Inside the walls, Cathedral Square holds three great churches: the Dormition, where the tsars were crowned; the Archangel, where they were buried; and the Annunciation, their private chapel. Nearby stand the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the Tsar Cannon of 1586 and the Tsar Bell, the largest bell in the world, cracked before it was ever rung.

The Armoury Chamber, on a separate ticket, holds the tsars' crowns, thrones, carriages and jeweled imperial Easter eggs.

Tips

  • Book the Armoury ahead: it admits visitors only at set times.
