Why Go

The name comes from krasnaya, an old Russian word that meant beautiful before it meant red. The square has seen coronation processions, executions and Soviet military parades. Around it stand the brick State Historical Museum, the little Kazan Cathedral, the long glass-roofed shopping arcades of the 1890s and Lenin's Mausoleum under the walls. With the Kremlin, it is a UNESCO site.

Tips

  • Come back at night, when the walls, towers and domes are lit.
