Why Go

Pavel Tretyakov, a merchant, began collecting in 1856 and gave his gallery to the city in 1892. The old building in Lavrushinsky Lane holds the icons and the great 19th-century painters, from Repin to Vasnetsov. Twentieth-century art, from Malevich's Black Square to Soviet painting, hangs in the New Tretyakov across from Gorky Park.
