Getting There
About 20 minutes on the Circumvesuviana train from Naples to Ercolano Scavi.

Why Go

Vesuvius buried Herculaneum under some 20 meters of volcanic material, which turned its wood to charcoal and kept houses standing to their upper stories, with mosaics, frescoes and even beds and doors in place. In the boat sheds on what was the shore, the skeletons of some 300 people who fled there were found.

Tips

  • It's much smaller than Pompeii: two or three hours is enough to see it well.
