Why Go

Vesuvius last erupted in 1944 and is still active and closely watched. From the car park at about 1,000 meters, a gravel path climbs for half an hour to the crater rim, 1,281 meters up, where steam rises from the walls and the view sweeps over Naples, the bay and Capri.

  • Buy your timed ticket online before you go: none are sold on the mountain.
