Why go

The Village grew up as a warren of crooked streets that predates Manhattan's grid. It was the home of the Beat poets and the folk revival, and the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street is where the modern gay rights movement began. Washington Square Park and its arch are the heart of it. South of Houston Street, SoHo's cast-iron buildings hold galleries, designer stores and the city's best window shopping.

Tips

  • Get a slice at Joe's Pizza on Carmine Street, and look for the Friends apartment building at Bedford and Grove Streets.
  • Small jazz clubs like the Village Vanguard need a reservation for the evening sets.
